Taste Your Way Along the South Okanagan Farm Trail

By Zain Alkhouri/

One of the best things about exploring the South Okanagan Farm Trail is that no two visits are ever the same. As the seasons change, so do the fruits, vegetables and local flavours waiting to be discovered.

Stretching through Osoyoos and Oliver, this self-guided route connects visitors with family-run orchards, bustling farm markets, passionate growers and local eateries, all celebrating the harvest of Canada's sun-soaked fruit basket.

Whether you're filling your cooler with just-picked cherries, discovering what's fresh from the orchard or enjoying a meal made with ingredients grown just down the road, every stop offers a new way to experience the South Okanagan's taste of place.

Here's your guide to what to eat, when to visit and where to find the freshest flavours along the Farm Trail.

Cherry Season

If there's one flavour that defines summer in the South Okanagan, it's cherries. Sweet, juicy and warmed by the summer sun, they're impossible to resist. Whether you're tasting them straight from the tree or filling your cooler for the drive home, cherry season alone is worth planning a trip around.

Where to taste them

Start at Danny's East Bench Fruit Market, where baskets of freshly picked cherries sit alongside blueberries, strawberries and seasonal vegetables sourced from both their own farm and neighbouring growers. It's an ideal first stop to experience the abundance of the South Okanagan.

Then, make your way to Osoyoos Fruit Basket, where we stepped into the orchard, learned how cherries are harvested and tasted them straight from the tree. Warm from the South Okanagan sun, they were some of the sweetest cherries we had all trip. Spending time with the family behind the orchard made us appreciate just how much care goes into every harvest.

Just across the road, Kailay Fruit Market is known for its sweet Rainier cherries. While you're there, browse the shelves for local honey, artisan products and other edible souvenirs that celebrate the region.

For a slower pace, stop at Peach Hill Farm Market. Surrounded by orchards, it's the kind of place that invites you to linger with a bag of fresh cherries while taking in the views.

Before heading home, swing by Dhaliwal's Sunview Market to compare varieties or stock up on one last bag. If you've still got room, treat yourself to an ice cream before continuing your adventure.

Stone Fruit Season

As cherry season begins to wind down, peaches, apricots, plums and nectarines take centre stage. Thanks to the South Okanagan's warm days, cool nights and rich soils, the region produces some of Canada's sweetest stone fruit. Every week brings something new to harvest, so don't be afraid to ask what's fresh.

Fun fact: Stone fruits get their name from the hard "stone," or pit, hidden inside. That includes peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines and even cherries.

Where to find them

In Oliver, Nature's Basket is a must for stone fruit lovers. During our visit, owner Beanjit Chahal welcomed us behind the scenes for a tour of the farm's tomato-growing facility before introducing us to the season's harvest. We sampled juicy apricots, sweet plums and, yes, even more cherries before picking up one of their curated fruit boxes for the road.

At Peach Hill Farm Market, peach season was only just beginning. The trees were heavy with fruit, quietly soaking up the South Okanagan sunshine before harvest. It's a reminder that every visit to the Farm Trail offers something a little different depending on when you arrive.

Before wrapping up your day, stop by Van Kalkeren Orchards. Alongside fresh peaches and other seasonal fruit, you'll find homemade jams, fresh and frozen fruit pies and plenty of local produce. Take a few extra minutes to browse the market because you never know what you'll end up taking home.

Berry Season

Cherries and peaches may steal the spotlight, but don't leave without making room for berries. Throughout the summer, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries fill farm stands across the South Okanagan, making them the perfect road trip snack.

Where to find them

You'll find sweet strawberries and plump blueberries at Danny's East Bench Fruit Market, alongside produce from neighbouring farms that showcases the collaborative spirit of the region.

For raspberries and an impressive selection of seasonal fruit, make time for Dhaliwal's Sunview Market. It's the kind of place where you stop for one basket and somehow leave with three.

Fresh From the Garden

The South Okanagan isn't just about fruit. Throughout the growing season, tomatoes, garlic, squash and countless other vegetables make their way from the field to local farm stands, showcasing another side of the region's harvest.

Where to taste the harvest

If tomatoes are in season, stop by Nature's Basket. Touring their greenhouse gave us a new appreciation for the care that goes into every crop before it reaches the market.

At Dhaliwal's Sunview Market, colourful summer squash, fragrant garlic and freshly harvested vegetables make it easy to build a meal inspired entirely by the South Okanagan.

Then there's Amazia Farm, where the conversation shifts from what's growing today to how farming is evolving for tomorrow.

Owner Michael Kosaka is helping shape the future of agriculture through organic no-till practices that focus on healthier soil, stronger crops and working with nature instead of against it. Walking the fields with Michael, it quickly became clear that every decision is made with the long-term health of the land in mind.

It's a refreshing reminder that great food begins long before harvest and that caring for the soil is every bit as important as celebrating what grows from it.

Eat Along the Way

Fresh fruit from a roadside stand is hard to beat, but one of the best parts of exploring the South Okanagan Farm Trail is seeing how local chefs and makers transform the region's harvest into memorable meals. From your morning coffee to dinner overlooking Osoyoos Lake, every stop offers another taste of the South Okanagan.

Start Your Morning at Joycraft Roasters

Every road trip deserves a great coffee stop, and Joycraft Roasters is exactly that. Their creamy iced lattes are the perfect way to kick off a warm South Okanagan morning, and the gooey peanut butter and jam-filled cookie is worth the stop on its own. Grab one for the road before setting off to explore the Farm Trail.

Lunch at Sofia Mexican Food

After a morning of farm hopping, head to Sofia Mexican Food, just steps from Osoyoos Fruit Basket. It's a great example of how the South Okanagan's food scene is shaped by cultures from around the world while celebrating the ingredients grown nearby.

Fresh local produce shines in every dish. We couldn't resist ordering the fish tacos and beef birria tacos, both packed with bold flavours and the perfect way to refuel before another afternoon of exploring.

End the Day at 15 Park Bistro

After filling your cooler and meeting the growers behind the region's harvest, settle in for dinner at 15 Park Bistro inside Watermark Beach Resort.

Executive Chef S.J. Lee and his team celebrate the South Okanagan's bounty through thoughtful cooking, warm hospitality and beautiful lakeside views. We started with melt-in-your-mouth pork belly bao buns before digging into the braised lamb shank served with herb tabbouleh couscous, pistachios, crispy shallots and mustard jus.

Dessert was the perfect finish. The white chocolate yogurt and raspberry panna cotta was light and refreshing while the salted caramel cheesecake was a decadent way to end the day.

Take Home a Taste of the South Okanagan

Before heading home, leave a little extra room in your cooler and your trunk.

Many of the Farm Trail stops offer more than fresh produce, making it easy to bring a little piece of the South Okanagan home with you. Pick up local honey and artisan goods at Kailay Fruit Market, browse homemade jams and fresh or frozen fruit pies at Van Kalkeren Orchards or stop by Sunkeya Farm Alpacas for their "Soap in an Alpaca Coat" and alpaca dryer balls. They're thoughtful keepsakes that celebrate another side of the region's farming community.

One of the best things about the South Okanagan Farm Trail is that every season tells a different story.

Visit in early summer and you'll find baskets overflowing with cherries. Return a few weeks later and the peaches are ready for harvest. As the season continues, tomatoes, berries, squash and countless other flavours begin to fill the farm stands.

That's the beauty of this trail. It invites you to slow down, chat with the growers, ask what's fresh and taste the region one stop at a time.

Leave a little extra room in your cooler, take the scenic route and enjoy the harvest. Chances are, you'll already be planning your next visit before you leave.
