2 Can't-Miss Winter Experiences in Manitoba

By Melissa Gagné/

There are certain destinations that are meant to be explored in winter and Manitoba stands out thanks to an abundance of outdoor activities and a deep respect for the season. Throughout the province, locals welcome visitors with open arms (and perhaps even a warm beverage) as they guide you through experiences designed to inspire awe at the beauty and simplicity that a snowy landscape offers.

Living in a winter climate fosters a keen ability to adapt along with unparalleled creativity, and Manitobans certainly know a thing or two about crafting experiences connected to their natural environment, elevated through a culinary lens.

Read on to discover more about two Manitoban experiences that take winter to a whole new level, and if you’re looking for a gift unlike any other, we’ve offered suggestions below to help you out with this planning.

Polar Bears Frontiers North

Frontiers North Adventures has been offering immersive and responsible adventures into the wild nature that is iconically Churchill since 1987. These seasonal experiences will have you getting up close and personal (but not too personal) with the wildlife that call this corner of the world home, if only for a certain time of the year.

Hop on the Tundra Buggy, a custom-built means of transport made for viewing polar bears,  for one of the best opportunities in the world to see the animals in the wild during their annual migration as they wait for the first sea ice on Hudson Bay. Another awaited migration in the area sees hundred, if not thousands, of belugas in the Churchill River estuary during the summer months, where you can hop on a zodiac or paddle over to really take it all in. Prepare to be awed as you realize it’s not whitecaps you’re looking at, but whales.

If dining under the northern lights isn’t something you’ve considered you might like to do, consider the seed planted. Take a ride on the Tundra Buggy over the frozen river for a remote pop up culinary experience you won’t soon be forgetting. Dan's Diner offers a seven course fixed menu featuring a very local taste of place from wild game and fish to Arctic berries and plants as you overlook Hudson Bay under the glow of the northern lights. Does it get any better than this?

Upcoming Giftable Experiences:

February-March: Northern Lights Adventures
July-August: Beluga Whale Adventures
October-November: Polar Bear Adventures

The Den

Dining at The Den will make you feel as though you are stepping into a winter cathedral. Carved out of over 500,000 pounds of snow by talented snow architect Clint Masse, this unique dining experience north of St. Adolphe comes to life for only a few short weeks of the year. Home to the world's largest snow maze, folks here know a thing or two about crafting immersive winter experiences you won't soon be forgetting.

Tickets include a four-course dinner by award-wining chef Luc Jean, a signature cocktail and live entertainment along with a full ice bar. For the full experience, plan to arrive early to wind your through the above mentioned Snow Maze (admission is included with your ticket) and explore the many ice sculptures to be discovered throughout.

Although The Den offers a respite from the elements, it is still in your best interest to bundle up in your warmest gear. You will be dining on snow after all.

Tickets are not yet on sale for the 2026 season, but keep an eye on their socials. Snow Maze gift certificates are currently available for purchase.
